What ⏜ means
It marks a group of terms from above. Picture a round bracket turned sideways, with its opening facing down. Instead of putting brackets on either side of an expression, you can span it with this curve to show which parts belong together.
The curve identifies the group; it does not itself tell you to add, multiply or perform another calculation. In an equation editor, both its position and its width must be handled by the mathematical layout.

3Questions people ask
2Why doesn't ⏜ stretch across my text?
It is not automatic. Ordinary text displays a separate character at the font's chosen width. A stretchable bracket needs mathematical layout support and a suitable math font.
Why do I see a box instead of the curve?
Your current font may lack this character. Try a font that supports mathematical symbols; changing the font can reveal the curve, but does not by itself position it over an expression.
