What 𞊛 means
It marks the consonant /j/, like the y in “yes.” Latin-based Toto spelling writes this sound as y. The name “ya” identifies the letter; it does not mean that a vowel is attached to this consonant.
Why was a separate Toto alphabet created?
To write Toto with letters chosen for its sounds and teaching. The community preferred original letterforms to adapting Bengali or Latin scripts for mother-tongue education. Work began in 2014, and the script was introduced to the community in May 2015; in a 2023 interview, Dhaniram Toto said he finished work on the letters in 2018. The alphabet also marks breathy vowels—vowels pronounced with audible breath—that Bengali-script writing did not distinguish.
