upper left quadrant chess pawn

Upper-Left Chess Pawn Quadrant

207/686

𜳎 is the upper-left pawn quadrant in a chess picture, not the whole piece. Sharp MZ home computers used separate character cells to build larger screen drawings, and this glyph preserves one tile.

Text symbol

What 𜳎 means

It was one cell in a larger chess graphic. Sharp MZ's European alternate display set assigned this tile to D1. Its four pawn quarters fit a 22 grid, making each character cell a building block for one complete image.

Sharp's MZ-700 home computer launched in Japan in October 1982. Unicode preserves this tile as text, helping software recreate or convert old MZ screens.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜳎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
