vai syllable bho

Vai Syllable Bho

195/300

ꗂ represents a Vai syllable: a b sound followed by an open, rounded o (like the vowel in “thought” for speakers who distinguish it). “Bho” is a conventional Latin rendering; its h is not a separate consonant. Alone, it gives one syllable, not a full word’s meaning. Vai is spoken in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and its script is used mainly for correspondence and records, especially among merchants and traders.

What ꗂ means

ꗂ represents one short syllable in Vai. A short syllable uses one character; a long vowel or diphthong may need a second. The word’s meaning comes from the surrounding Vai text.

If someone sends ꗂ by itself, treat it as a fragment of Vai writing. Ask for the surrounding word or sentence before trying to translate it.

Why was the Vai script created?

To write the Vai language. The script was developed around 1833 in Liberia, mainly by Vai speaker Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ, for a language that had no written form. Bukẹlẹ later said a dream inspired it.

The earliest known surviving sample is a page from 1834, written by Fan Dawo Kelondo at missionary John Leighton Wilson’s request.

Possible influence from Latin, Arabic, or Cherokee remains a question about the script’s history; no settled account makes ꗂ itself a borrowed character from any of them. Later standardization efforts did not erase every difference: historical sources and modern preferences preserve variant glyph forms.

Why does ꗂ look different or fail to display?

Your font may lack Vai coverage. A box or blank where ꗂ should appear usually means the selected font cannot draw the script.

Vai-capable fonts can give the same character different outlines. Those are differences in font design, not in the identity or reading of ꗂ.

Use a Vai keyboard or input tool for composing Vai text. A Unicode character map that searches by character name can help when your input method lacks the syllabary; the Latin rendering “bho” is not a substitute.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꗂ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Vai block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
