ꗃ

vai syllable bo

Vai syllable Bo

196/300

ꗃ is one syllable sign in the Vai script, a writing system for the Vai language; alone, it is a fragment of a word, not a complete meaning. One table that writes Vai with Latin letters transcribes it as ɓɔ; “Bo” is a label for the syllable. The script took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s, and its early record includes local histories and Islamic-influenced manuscripts.

What ꗃ means

It is a syllable sign that belongs inside a Vai word.

The Vai syllabary is a set of signs that represent syllables. A table that writes Vai with Latin letters transcribes this sign as ɓɔ; “Bo” is its conventional label. The full Vai word supplies the meaning.

If someone sends only ꗃ, you can identify it as a fragment of Vai writing, but the sign alone does not reveal the intended word. Ask for the whole word or a translation.

How did the Vai script develop?

It took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s. The writing project is associated with Momolu Duwalu Bukele and other Vai speakers. Its practical purpose was to write Vai and support local reading and writing.

The earliest known surviving sample is a manuscript page dated 1834, written by Fan Dawo Kelondo. Early records include missionary accounts, local histories, and Islamic-influenced manuscripts. Missionaries discussed the script as evidence of African intellectual and religious capacity; Vai Muslims used it for Islamic writing.

Before the syllabary, Vai and neighboring graphic systems used logograms—marks for words or ideas—in communication, warfare, and divination. Those signs were gradually dropped as the syllabary spread. A proposed connection to Cherokee remains conjectural; later Mende, Loma, Kpelle, Bassa, Bamum, and Bamana systems drew on the Vai syllabic model while creating their own signs.

Why does ꗃ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Vai block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is ꗃ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
