What ꕸ means
It writes the Vai syllable transcribed as “boo.”
Vai is written with a syllabary: a set of signs where each sign represents one syllable. Neighboring signs form words, so ꕸ contributes to a Vai word; on its own, it has no established English translation.
Why was the Vai script created?
Vai speakers created it to write their language.
The script took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s, chiefly through Momolu Duwalu Bukele and other Vai speakers. Teaching networks helped it spread, while correspondence, record-keeping and trade gave it practical uses, especially for merchants. Vai literacy also developed alongside literacy in English and Arabic.
Some of the earliest surviving Vai manuscripts date to 1834. Older Vai texts also used logograms—signs that represent whole words or ideas—alongside syllabic signs such as ꕸ. The repertoire gained additions in 1911; standardization efforts followed in 1899 and 1962.
The Vai syllabary served as a model for Mende, Loma and Kpelle syllabaries. Proposed Latin, Arabic and Cherokee influences on Vai's own origins remain unsettled.
