Vai Syllable Bu

158/300

In Vai, ꖝ contributes one spoken syllable: ɓu, beginning with a short inward b-like sound and ending in “oo.” The surrounding word supplies its meaning. A message containing only this syllable may leave a reader without enough context.

What ꖝ means

It writes one Vai syllable, shown in Latin transcription as ɓu. The initial ɓ is a b-like consonant made with air briefly moving inward; u is like the “oo” in “boot.” Vai is spoken in coastal western Liberia and eastern Sierra Leone.

The script took shape around Jondu, Liberia, in 1832 or 1833, with the Vai man Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ chiefly credited with its development. Reports describe the writing in 1834; a surviving manuscript from that year is the earliest extant manuscript in an indigenous sub-Saharan African script.

Vai speakers used it to write their own language, especially in correspondence, record-keeping, and trade. Messenger-carried writing also supported negotiations and Vai autonomy amid colonial and missionary pressure.

What changed in Vai writing?

The script moved from early variants toward a standard repertoire. Early texts used logograms—signs for whole syllables linked to meanings—and sometimes more than one character for the same spoken syllable. Standardization efforts in 1899 and 1962 helped shape the set. As of 2026, Vai writing is still learned informally, so many literate readers know only part of it.

A Cherokee influence remains possible, but as of 2026 the evidence does not establish that Vai signs were copied from Cherokee writing. Bassa is another West African script; graphic descent from Bassa to Vai is also unproven.

How do I type ꖝ?

A Vai keyboard suits regular writing; desktop hex input works too. In Word on Windows, type A59D and press AltX. On macOS, select Unicode Hex Input, hold Option, and type A59D. In GTK Linux apps, press CtrlShiftU, type A59D, then press Enter or Space.

Vai characters do not join or reshape; each keeps its own form beside the next.

Neutral in Vai writing; unfamiliar to readers who do not know the script.

Without shared Vai context, a lone syllable may not convey your intended message.
