What ꗪ means
It represents one spoken syllable in Vai.
The romanization ɓɛ names its sound: ɓ is a b-like sound made with inward airflow, and ɛ is an open e, like the vowel in English “bed.”
Why was the Vai syllabary created?
To write Vai and record trade.
The Vai script began taking shape around 1832–33; its earliest surviving specimen is dated 1834. A later origin account tells of a dream, while possible Cherokee influence has been debated.
The Vai model later inspired syllabaries for Mende, Loma, and Kpelle. A study of manuscripts from 1834–2005 found that signs grew visually simpler with repeated writing; the modern orthography was standardized in the early 1960s.
