What ꗀ means
In MediaWiki’s documented Vai transliteration layout, type w, x, then ~. That layout maps wx~ to ꗀ; the tilde marks nasalization, a sound made with airflow through the nose.
“Won” is a Latin-letter label for the syllable. In Vai spelling, ꗀ contributes one sound unit; the meaning comes from the whole word.
What does ꗀ contribute to a Vai word?
It represents one Vai syllable within a word. Vai writing emerged in the early 1830s, chiefly through Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ and other Vai collaborators. The earliest known surviving sample is a page written in 1834 by Fan Dawo Kelondo at missionary John Leighton Wilson’s request; it dates surviving evidence, not the start of Vai use.
The script was created to write Vai in coastal western Liberia and eastern Sierra Leone. It served correspondence and record-keeping, including trade; schools and royal sponsorship also tied literacy to Vai autonomy alongside neighboring Latin- and Arabic-based traditions. Standardization efforts in 1899 and 1962 pushed the syllabary toward more sound-based, consistent spelling and reduced earlier variation. Earlier Vai logograms—signs for words or ideas used in communication, war, and divination—were mostly dropped.
Language-specific and technical; its ordinary use is Vai writing.
