What ꗧ means
It marks one syllable used to write Vai words.
Vai is a syllabary: each sign represents a spoken syllable. ꗧ contributes to a word but does not identify the whole word by itself; if it arrives alone, ask what word or passage it belongs to.
How did Vai writing begin?
The Vai script emerged in Liberia in the early 1830s.
It is associated with Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ of Jondu, widely regarded as its inventor and chief promoter, though its ultimate origins and possible outside models remain debated. The earliest known surviving sample is a page Fan Dawo Kelondo wrote for John Leighton Wilson in 1834; the longer Book of Ndole survives from about 1845.
What was the Vai script made for?
It was created to write Vai for communication, records, and trade.
The script appears in traders’ correspondence and records, as well as in diaries, clan histories, folktales, newsletters, and Gospel and Qur’an translations. Its uses extend from manuscript writing and commerce to literature and digital text, while ꗧ remains one syllable sign within the same writing system.
Vai’s syllabic organization later influenced Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts; evidence also points to influence on Bamum and Bagam, and possible influence on Bamana. Latin and Arabic, and possibly Cherokee, have been proposed as early models, but that debate does not establish that Vai copied any one script.
Neutral within Vai writing; without the surrounding word, the sign is hard to interpret.
Treat a lone ꗧ as a fragment; ask what word or passage it came from.

1Why does ꗧ show as a square?
The font lacks a Vai glyph. Use a font with Vai support; the square is a missing-character placeholder and does not change the intended character.
