vai syllable dhho

Vai syllable dhho

207/300

ꗎ is one syllable in Vai writing, so it usually cannot be translated on its own. In a word, its sound works with neighboring syllables and context; alone, it remains a fragment until more text is available.

Text symbol

What ꗎ means

It writes one Vai syllable, not a complete word.

Its approximate reading is /ðɔ/: a voiced sound made with the tongue between the teeth, followed by an open o. Neighboring syllables, tone, and word breaks help determine its contribution to a Vai word; one sign alone is not enough to translate a complete word.

Why was the Vai script created?

It was developed to write Vai for local communication.

The active tradition is traced to Momolu Duwalu Bukele and collaborators around 1833; a surviving external sample dates to 1834. The script’s ultimate influences remain disputed.

Vai writing appears in letters, trade records, family histories, folktales, religious translations, and newspapers. Its syllable signs were revised and standardized over time; a University of Liberia standardization effort is documented in 1962.

Which scripts did Vai influence?

The clearest links are to later West African writing systems.

Vai’s syllabic design is linked to the later Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts. The Bassa alphabet was created by someone familiar with Vai; possible influence on Bamum and Bamana is less certain. These are script-level links, not proof that individual signs share a reading.

A proposed Cherokee connection is debated; resemblance alone does not show that ꗎ is a Cherokee character or has a Cherokee reading.

In running Vai text, ꗎ forms part of a word; alone, it reads as a syllable fragment.

As of 2026, a square in place of ꗎ can mean the font lacks a Vai glyph; the character remains in the text.
