What ꖂ means
It contributes a syllable to the Vai word containing it. The “dhhoo” label identifies this entry in the Vai syllabary; the surrounding word supplies its meaning.
Vai is spoken in coastal areas of western Liberia and eastern Sierra Leone. Its syllabary took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s, chiefly through Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ of Jondu, who later said a dream inspired it. An 1834 manuscript at Harvard’s Houghton Library is the earliest surviving sample; The Book of Ndole is the longest surviving text from the script’s early period.
What was the Vai script used for?
It was made for writing the Vai language in daily life. It served correspondence and record-keeping, especially among merchants and traders. Vai education helped the script spread, and later Vai writing included Qur’an and New Testament translations.
Its origin has no settled single explanation: influence from Latin, Arabic and possibly Cherokee has been proposed, as has the regularizing of an earlier pictographic system. Mende Kikakui, a separate syllabic script for Mende, is thought to have drawn influence from Vai. Visual resemblance alone does not establish who borrowed from whom.
Standardization was attempted in 1899 and again at a 1962 University of Liberia conference. Written forms vary among sources, so a different historical shape does not necessarily mean the syllable itself changed.
What does it mean if someone sends ꖂ alone?
It gives you a Vai syllable; the surrounding words carry the message. If you do not read Vai, ask for the word or sentence rather than guessing from the sign's shape.
In a Vai message, ꖂ is part of the writing; its social or emotional tone comes from the words around it.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꖂ show as a box?
It is a font-coverage issue: the active font lacks a Vai glyph. The text can still contain ꖂ; a font with Vai coverage can display it without changing the character.
