vai syllable ge

Vai Syllable Ge

263/300

ꘆ is the Vai syllable conventionally transcribed in Latin letters as ge; it contributes one sound-bearing unit inside a word. In Vai text, surrounding syllables complete the word. A Vai transliteration layout can produce it with g then e, while missing font support may hide its shape.

What ꘆ means

ꘆ writes the Vai syllable conventionally transcribed as ge.

Vai is a syllabary: each sign represents a consonant-and-vowel syllable, rather than a single alphabetic letter. In a Vai word, ꘆ contributes that syllable; surrounding signs determine the whole word.

The Vai script took shape in Jondu, Liberia, around 1833 through Duwalu Bukele and other Vai speakers. The earliest surviving sample is a 1834 manuscript by Fan Dawo Kelondo for missionary John Leighton Wilson. The script served letters, schools, records and books in Vai. Its dream-origin story lent the new “book” religious legitimacy, while the script also asserted Vai standing among neighbors who wrote in Arabic or Latin.

Why did Vai writing change over time?

Vai writing shifted from mixed signs toward a standardized syllabary.

Early texts used logograms—signs for whole words—alongside many local shape variants. Between the 1840s and 1960s, standardization largely removed the word-sign layer and narrowed the system toward phonetic syllables.

Researchers have considered whether Cherokee influenced Vai; the evidence is circumstantial, so contact is possible, not established. Arabic and Latin served as neighboring literacy models, but ꘆ is a Vai sign, not an Arabic or Latin letter.

How do I type ꘆ?

Type g and then e in a Vai transliteration layout.

The layout maps that key sequence to ꘆ; g selects the consonant and e the vowel. Follow ꘌ to mark the preceding vowel as long, so ꘆꘌ writes ge with a lengthened vowel.

Font support is separate: a square or question mark means the active font cannot draw Vai characters, not that the text is corrupted.

Tone: neutral in writing; by itself, ꘆ is only one Vai syllable.
