What ꔊ means
It writes one Vai syllable, not a full message. “Mgbee” is the Latin-letter transcription; in the Vai syllabary, each sign represents a spoken syllable, and the surrounding word gives the reading.
Vai writing is documented from the early 1830s. The Book of Ndole, a surviving early Vai text, was composed before 1849. Early practical uses included correspondence and schooling; trade records came later. Older Vai graphic systems supplied some early logograms, signs for whole words. Standardization from the 1840s through the 1960s shifted the system toward phonetic syllable spelling. Latin and Arabic scripts may have influenced its development; a connection to the Cherokee syllabary, a script for the Cherokee language, remains conjectural.
How do I type ꔊ?
On Linux with GTK, press Ctrl+Shift+U, type a50a, then press Enter. A Vai transliteration layout also produces ꔊ when you type mgb followed by e. If a square or question mark appears, the active font lacks a Vai glyph. Older SIL Vai fonts are legacy 8-bit fonts, not Unicode fonts.
In Vai text, ꔊ is ordinary syllable spelling; outside that context, a lone sign can be hard to interpret.
A lone ꔊ gives one Vai syllable, not a translation of the whole message.

Your font lacks a Vai glyph, so the system shows a missing-character box. Switch to a font with Unicode Vai support.
