What ꕾ means
Use your system’s Unicode input method.
On Linux, press CtrlShiftU, type a57e, then Enter or Space. On macOS, enable Unicode Hex Input, hold Option, and type A57E. On Windows, use Character Map and search for Vai.
As of 2026-09-12, iOS and Android had no official hexadecimal entry path; a mobile keyboard that supports Vai is the practical route.
What does ꕾ mean?
It writes the Vai syllable labeled Voo.
A syllable is a sound unit within a word; Voo is its Latin-letter label, not a translated word. The sign is used to write Vai, and in a word it supplies that syllable. The script took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s. Its earliest surviving sample is a one-page manuscript dated 1834, written by Fan Dawo Kelondo at John Leighton Wilson’s request. It was made for writing Vai and used in correspondence, record-keeping, trade, and teaching.
Early Vai writing also used logograms—signs that stand for whole words. The script’s shapes and inventory changed over time. Scholars have proposed contact with Latin, Arabic, or Cherokee, as well as development from earlier Vai picture-like signs; no single origin is settled.
Why does ꕾ look different?
Fonts can draw it differently or may not include it.
ꕾ is font-rendered text. A Vai-capable font may give it a different outline from another; a font without Vai coverage can show a missing-glyph box. Either way, the intended character stays the same.
