vai syllable ve

Vai syllable Ve

243/300

ꗲ is a Vai syllable, transcribed vɛ: a v sound followed by the open e in English “bed.” The Vai script serves Vai-language correspondence, records, trade and education. Sent alone, it gives no fixed social message. A box or question mark usually means the font cannot show Vai.

What ꗲ means

It is a Vai syllable transcribed vɛ, with an open e.

Here vɛ is a Latin transcription: say the v sound followed by the open e in English “bed.” The Vai language is spoken in coastal western Liberia and eastern Sierra Leone. The Vai script developed in Jondu, Liberia, in the early 1830s, chiefly by Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ. By 1834, missionaries had reported the script. It served correspondence, record-keeping, trade and Vai-language education, alongside English and Arabic literacy.

Origin accounts differ: one credits a dream, another says Bukẹlẹ was challenged to write like literate neighbors. Latin and Arabic writing formed part of the contact setting; Cherokee influence has also been proposed, but remains unsettled. Early Vai texts included logograms—whole-word signs with associated meanings—as well as alternate syllable forms. Standardization efforts in 1899 and 1962 shaped the standard syllabary.

What does it mean when someone sends ꗲ?

It has no fixed social message on its own.

It is one syllable, not enough to identify a whole word or the sender’s intent. Ask for the surrounding Vai word if you need to interpret it.

How do I type ꗲ?

As of 2026, type v then q in MediaWiki’s Vai layout.

Other input layouts may use different keys.

If ꗲ shows as a box or question mark, the receiving device may lack a font with Vai coverage.

A written Vai syllable; by itself, it is too little to identify a word or a sender’s tone.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꗲ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
