What ꗊ means
It writes the Vai syllable represented by “vo.”
In Vai, one character marks one syllable. Older texts also used logograms—signs for words or meanings—but ꗊ is a syllable sign.
When did Vai writing begin?
Vai writing took shape in the early 1830s.
It was developed for the Vai language. Accounts credit Momolu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ and other Vai speakers; a manuscript from 1834 may be the oldest surviving example.
Cherokee influence is disputed. Vai's success later influenced other West African script projects; Vai writing coexisted with Arabic and English literacy.
How do I type ꗊ?
Use an input method configured for Vai.
Unicode encodes ꗊ but does not supply a keyboard layout. SIL's Vai package included Windows keyboard definitions in 1999. If ꗊ shows as a box, the app likely lacks a font with its glyph.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꗊ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
