What ꗳ means
ꗳ represents the Vai syllable “te.” Vai writing represents spoken syllables with signs; readers understand a word from its sequence of signs.
By itself, ꗳ identifies one syllable but not the intended word. The surrounding Vai text or a translation supplies that meaning.
How did the Vai script develop?
Vai writing took shape in Liberia around 1832–33. Its development is associated with Momolu Duwalu Bukele and other Vai speakers. Early manuscripts collected in 1834 survive; the Book of Ndole, a long written work, is the longest surviving early Vai text.
The script let Vai speakers write their own language. Surviving works include diaries, clan histories, folktales, short stories, religious translations, and newsletters. In 1962, the University of Liberia standardized the script by selecting forms for modern use.
Older Vai writing included logograms, signs representing whole words, alongside many shape variants. Later standardization favored more regular syllable signs. The Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts, developed in neighboring communities later, were influenced by Vai’s syllabic organization. A possible Cherokee influence on Vai has also been debated, but the connection remains uncertain.
Language-specific writing; its meaning comes from a Vai-language context.
