Vai syllable the

In Vai writing, ꗴ represents a syllable labeled “the”; that Latin-letter label identifies the syllable, not the English word. The Vai script took shape in the early 1830s so Vai speakers could write letters in their language.

What ꗴ means

In Vai, ꗴ represents the syllable labeled “the.” That label uses Latin letters; it is not the English article.

Vai is a syllabic script: each sign represents a spoken syllable. Signs combine in sequence to form words, so the surrounding Vai characters show how ꗴ fits.

For direct entry, Windows Office converts A5F4 to ꗴ with AltX; Linux GTK has a Unicode-entry shortcut.

Vai writing began with letters and records

Vai writing took shape in the early 1830s, associated chiefly with Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ and collaborators. The earliest known sample is a one-page manuscript by Fan Dawo Kelondo from 1834; an early Vai text called the Book of Ndole survives from around 1845, and European descriptions appeared in 1849. These records do not establish one uncontested beginning: historical accounts differ over earlier dates and shared credit.

The script was developed in part so Vai speakers could write letters to friends in their language. It later served schools, family correspondence, business records, and traders’ accounts.

In Vai communities described by literacy research from the 1970s, Vai writing served personal and local public needs; English was tied to schooling and state institutions, while Arabic served Islamic learning. The separate Mende Kikakui writing system was likely influenced in part by Vai.

Why does ꗴ show as a box?

A box means your active font cannot draw ꗴ.

A font with Vai support may draw it with a different outline, but the encoded character stays the same.

In Vai writing, ꗴ is ordinary text; outside a Vai sentence, it may look like unfamiliar script.

A single syllable does not translate a complete Vai word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꗴ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Vai block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
