What ꘞ means

It is a Vai logogram glossed “be small.”

A logogram is a sign that carries a word-level meaning. Early Vai writing used such signs for complete syllables with an associated meaning; regular Vai writing is mainly syllabic. ꘞ’s gloss belongs to a meaning-bearing sign in that older layer.

ꘞ appears among the logograms in The Book of Ndole, the longest surviving text from early Vai script use.

How did the Vai script develop?

It grew from a community writing project.

Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ chiefly developed the script and later said a dream inspired it. The practical goal was to write letters and books in Vai; the script also served correspondence and record-keeping, especially among merchants and traders.

Some early logograms were absorbed into the regular syllabary; others, including ꘞ, were preserved as distinct symbols. Possible influences include Latin and Arabic writing; a Cherokee connection is more tentative. Another possibility is that Bukẹlẹ phoneticized and regularized an earlier pictographic writing system. Forms changed across surviving charts, while standardization efforts took place in 1899 and at a conference at the University of Liberia in 1962.

What if someone sends me ꘞ?

Its meaning belongs to Vai writing. Inside a Vai-language message, read it as the logogram “be small” in context. Outside that setting, its meaning may not be shared; ask what word or context the sender intended rather than guessing.

A historical, Vai-specific sign whose reading belongs to Vai writing.

Outside a Vai-text context, the recipient may not recognize it; ask or give a gloss.
