Variation Selector-172

Variation Selector-172 is an invisible mark for choosing how an East Asian ideograph (a written character used in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text) is drawn. It has no conversational meaning; as of 2026-08-03, Unicode’s ideograph registry lists no sequence that uses this selector.

What 󠆛 means

It needs its base character and a registered pair.

Variation selectors let unformatted text request a character’s drawn form when font settings cannot travel. A 2003 Unicode proposal identified ideograph variants as an expected use; the registry began registering pairs in 2007. Separate collections let scholars, governments, and publishers record different glyph choices.

Unsupported selectors stay invisible and leave the base character unchanged.

Why does 󠆛 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
