variation selector-171

Variation Selector-171

155/240

Variation Selector-171 is an invisible Unicode mark whose job is to request a different glyph for a preceding character, not to represent an object or emotion. It matters only inside a valid ideographic variation sequence, and unsupported software normally leaves the base visible while hiding the selector. The latest IVD sequence file, dated 2026-08-03, contains no registered sequence using E019A, so this code point has no standalone design to display.

Text symbol

What 󠆚 means

It is a formatting instruction attached to a base character. Variation selectors were created for plain text, where choosing a font or style could not preserve a requested glyph form. An Adobe proposal dated August 23, 2003, anticipated using them with CJK ideographs; a 2004 design proposal focused on names, places, dictionaries, and historical material where exact appearance matters.

The later ideographic system reflects regional and historical differences in Han glyphs: one underlying character can need different glyph subsets for different communities or source collections. UTS #37 therefore defines meaning at the level of the complete base-plus-selector sequence, not the selector number alone. The broader mechanism also serves Mongolian letters, but VS17–VS256 are the ideographic-specific range; that is an encoding relationship, not a shared standalone meaning. Adobe-Japan1 was registered on 2007-12-14 as one Japanese collection.

How do I use VS171 without losing it?

Keep it immediately after the base character it modifies. In Unicode-aware input, insert the full code point as part of the complete variation sequence; do not treat VS171 as a freestanding character. If the selected font or application does not support that sequence, the base remains visible and the selector stays invisible.

Technical and invisible; it belongs in text and font workflows, not as a conversational symbol.

Do not send it alone expecting a visible mark; invalid or unsupported use has no visible effect.

Why does VS171 disappear?

It is default-ignorable: unsupported or unregistered use leaves the base character visible and hides the selector.
