What 󠆡 means
It selects a character form only in a registered pair. An Ideographic Variation Sequence (IVS) puts it after a Han character, a character from the Chinese-derived writing tradition. The pair, not VS178 alone, chooses the written form.
The IVS scheme took shape in 2003 so plain text could preserve a character's written form when font settings could not travel with it. In Japan, fine character forms can matter in official papers and formal invitations.
Unicode 18.0 gives a selector a display effect only in registered sequences.

Questions people ask
1Why does 󠆡 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Variation Selectors Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
