variation selector-4

Variation Selector-4

4/14

Type FE03 immediately after a supported base; on its own, it changes nothing. In Unicode 17.0, its defined hieroglyph pairings rotate selected Egyptian signs by 15–75; unsupported pairs leave the base visually unchanged. It is not a general bold, italic, or emoji switch.

What ︃ means

Put FE03 immediately after a supported base character.

A bare selector has nothing to modify. Enter it with your editor's Unicode method, then place it directly after the base.

For an Egyptian hieroglyph rotation, use the exact standardized base-plus-FE03 pair; VS4 does not change arbitrary symbols.

What does FE03 mean after a hieroglyph?

It asks for a specific glyph variant of the base.

Unicode 3.2 (2002) formalized generic variation selectors for plain-text glyph choices. Early examples covered Mongolian forms and mathematical notation. The base remains the character; the selector changes how it is displayed.

Egyptian sequences later reused that mechanism for non-right-angle turns of hieroglyphs. VS1–VS3 mark right-angle rotations; FE03 marks defined oblique turns. In left-to-right text the turn is clockwise; in right-to-left text it is counterclockwise.

Why does Variation Selector-4 look blank or do nothing?

Without a supported pairing, the mark is ignored.

A text renderer normally hides an unsupported selector and displays the base as before. A show-hidden or diagnostic view can reveal an invisible mark.

Treat a standalone FE03 as a technical leftover, not a message or tone marker. It does not make arbitrary text bold, italic, or emoji-style.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ︃ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Variation Selectors block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
