yezidi letter et

Yezidi Letter Et

42/47

𐺩 writes the e vowel in Yezidi words, close to the e in Spanish “mesa”; Latin spellings use ê. The script runs from right to left, and this letter supplies a vowel inside a word rather than naming a message by itself. Its modern revival is much later than the religious texts associated with its earlier history.

What 𐺩 means

It marks the e vowel in Yezidi words.

Its sound is close to the e in Spanish “mesa”; Latin spelling writes it as ê. 𐺩 sits inside a word, supplying a vowel rather than naming an object or message by itself.

The two religious texts associated with the script may date to the 12th or 13th centuries. They became widely known through publications in 1911, though scholarship has questioned whether they preserve an ancient manuscript tradition.

Why do Yezidi letters look joined?

Older ligatures or optional font behavior can make them look connected.

Yezidi is written from right to left, and its modern letters normally stand apart. Historical texts contain ligatures, while some fonts can optionally join letters. A connected shape can reflect older typography or font behavior rather than a different sound.

The language has also been written in Latin, Cyrillic, and Arabic-based scripts. Its classical letter order followed the Perso-Arabic order, but this letter belongs to the Yezidi alphabet, not the Arabic alphabet.

How did the Yezidi script return to use?

The modern revival followed a 2013 decision.

Before the revival, the script had been used for religious writing. In 2013, the Yezidi Spiritual Council in Georgia decided to revive it; specialists adapted it for modern Êzdîkî, also called Kurmanji.

In the revived orthography, clergy in Tbilisi use the script for prayers and sacred books. Yezidi clergy do not treat the two famous manuscripts as authentic sources of faith, so the texts' history and religious authority remain separate questions.

Using 𐺩 marks writing in the Yezidi alphabet.

A recipient who cannot read Yezidi script may get little from a lone vowel.

Why does 𐺩 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
