What ꋎ means
It represents one spoken Yi syllable.
In the standard Latin-letter spelling for Yi, called Yi Pinyin, this syllable is cyrx. Its final x marks secondary-high tone, a higher-pitch pattern. The related ꋏ is cyr, the corresponding syllable at midlevel tone. The surrounding Yi word or sentence supplies its meaning.
How did Yi writing change?
Local Yi writing became a modern Liangshan standard.
Stone, bronze, pottery, and bone inscriptions have all been proposed as early Yi writing. Some Guizhou finds dated to the Western Han period (206 BC–AD 9) are among these proposals, though their identification is debated. The earliest securely identified surviving example is an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485. Before modern standardization, Yi writing varied by locality; bimo, Yi ritual specialists, preserved local forms in religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts.
To improve literacy, a standard Liangshan form was selected from local Yi traditions, devised in 1974, and officially promulgated in 1980. ꋎ belongs to this standard, which represents Liangshan Nuosu Yi. A 2024 Unicode proposal records the standardized writing in use for religion, education, books and newspapers, public signs and notices, and video subtitles.
