What ꋏ means
This glyph records one Nuosu syllable; its word-level meaning comes from context.
In the Liangshan Yi romanization, the syllable is written cyr. It has no final t, x, or p, the endings used to distinguish other tones; it carries a mid-level tone, spoken at a steady middle pitch.
A Nuosu grammar glosses the romanized syllable cyr as “pinch.” Another study uses ꋏ in a phrase naming a particular place around a hearth. These are context-specific uses, not a complete translation of the character alone.
How did the Yi script develop?
Yi writing has older local traditions and a standardized form for Liangshan Nuosu.
Traditional Yi writing served religious, ritual, medical, and family-history texts. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, transmitted texts through their lineages. A bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is cited as the earliest surviving Yi inscription; claims for older objects remain disputed.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy and schooling. It standardizes writing for Liangshan Nuosu, not every Yi language.
Neutral within Liangshan Nuosu writing; outside that context, it is specialized Yi script text.

A missing-glyph box. A font without Yi coverage cannot draw ꋏ, so it shows a placeholder; the character itself remains unchanged.
