What ꉽ means
Enter hex in a Yi input method, then choose ꉽ.
hex is the Latin-letter spelling of this Liangshan Yi syllable; its final x marks the secondary-high rising tone. An ordinary English keyboard leaves those letters as text unless a Yi input method is active.
What does ꉽ do in Yi writing?
ꉽ writes one Nuosu Yi syllable; surrounding words give its meaning.
The Yi script grew through local traditions rather than from a single newly invented set of signs. The earliest securely dated surviving inscriptions are around 1485. Bimo priests—Yi religious specialists—copied traditional forms for ritual, magic, medicine and family genealogies; attribution to A Ke remains disputed.
The Liangshan standard took shape in 1974 and was officially promulgated in 1980 for one dialect, later supporting school and publishing use. “Cuan” and “Wei” are historical labels for Yi writing traditions, not names for ꉽ. Traditional Yi writing did not descend from Chinese characters.
Neutral in Yi writing; opaque when sent without Yi-language context.
Sending ꉽ alone will not communicate the English word “hex.”
