What ꆧ means

It marks one spoken unit within a word. Nuosu is the Liangshan variety of the Yi language. In standard Liangshan romanization, ꆧ is written “hlop”; its final p marks a low-falling pitch, with the voice starting low and falling further. The surrounding Yi word supplies the translation.

Yi origin traditions differ. One credits Aki with devising the script during the Tang dynasty; other accounts claim very early inscriptions on stone, bronze, pottery, and bone. The earliest surviving dated Yi inscription is on a Guizhou bronze bell from 1485; Yi paper texts survive from around 1500.

Why did bimo use Yi writing?

It carried ritual and practical knowledge across generations. Bimo are Yi ritual specialists who copied and recited local manuscripts. For generations, these texts covered rites, healing, medicine, genealogies, myths, and songs. Local traditions varied in character sets and writing direction.

The standardized Liangshan form was officially promulgated for Nuosu in 1980. It draws on traditional Yi writing and uses a syllabary, where each sign represents a spoken syllable. Yi Pinyin is its Latin-letter pronunciation guide, and this standard applies to Nuosu rather than every Yi language. Chinese-character influence has been proposed but remains debated; visual resemblance alone does not prove descent.

What if someone sends ꆧ alone?

Alone, it does not identify a whole Yi word. In Nuosu text, ꆧ supplies one syllable that must be read with the surrounding word and dialect. If it arrives without that context, treat it as a script sample or ask which Yi word it belongs to; assigning a mood would be a guess.

In Nuosu text it is language material; outside that setting, it reads as a character someone may be asking you to identify.

By itself, ꆧ does not tell you the intended word; ask for the Yi text around it.

Drift: As of 2024, standardized Sichuan Yi appeared in education, books, newspapers, signs, notices, and subtitles. In 2024, interviewed Nuosu participants described digital use chiefly for literature, art, and learning, rather than personal messages.
