What ꆨ means
It represents one spoken syllable in Liangshan Yi.
Standard Liangshan Yi romanization writes it as hlex. The final x marks the secondary-high tone, a distinct pitch pattern, rather than an extra consonant.
The sign contributes a syllable to a Yi word or sentence; its role depends on the surrounding text.
How did standardized Yi writing develop?
The standardized form grew out of older regional Yi writing.
A bronze bell inscription from 1485 is among the earliest securely dated surviving Yi records. Older evidence has been proposed from stone, bronze, pottery, and bone, but it does not settle where the writing tradition began. By the Ming period, different Yi communities used regional forms.
Local forms were used by village ritual specialists for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical writing. The standardized Liangshan script has its own syllable signs and borrows punctuation from Chinese. Devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy, it was used in textbooks, newspapers, and adult-education materials.
How can I enter hlex?
Use a Yi input method, then choose its character candidate.
The Windows Yi input method lets you enter syllable sounds on a regular keyboard, then choose from Yi characters. Microsoft's guide, updated 2024-06-20, describes this flow: type hlex and select ꆨ from the candidate list.
If the sign appears as an empty box, the active font likely lacks Yi glyph coverage. A font that includes Yi syllables can display it.
