yi syllable vix

Yi Syllable Vix

228/1165

ꃣ is a Liangshan Yi syllable, spelled vix in Latin-letter notation; alone, it has no fixed English translation. Its place in a Yi word supplies the meaning, while the final x marks tone rather than a consonant. The standard that uses it was shaped from older local Yi scripts.

What ꃣ means

ꃣ represents a Liangshan Yi syllable, not a standalone word.

In the Latin-letter notation used for Liangshan Yi, vix breaks down as v- for the initial consonant, i for the vowel, and final x for the mid-high tone—a pitch level, not a consonant. Typing vix on a Latin keyboard gives those letters, not ꃣ.

By itself, ꃣ does not provide a dependable one-word translation; its meaning comes from the Yi word around it. Sent alone, it is best read as a fragment of Yi text or a script sample.

Where did the Yi syllabary come from?

The modern syllabary draws on older local Yi writing traditions.

The earliest securely dated surviving Yi inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485; some undated manuscripts may be older. Historical sources call traditional Yi writing Cuan or Wei. The Yi script does not appear to descend from Han Chinese characters.

Before standardization, local Yi scripts were chiefly preserved by bimo, ritual specialists who used them for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Glyph sets and writing directions varied by region. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy, textbooks, newspapers, and other modern writing. It draws on older Northern Yi forms and targets the Liangshan dialect, not every Yi variety.

How do I type ꃣ with a Yi keyboard?

Use a Yi input method for the syllabary.

A plain Latin keyboard enters vix as letters; a Yi layout must select the Yi syllable instead. A blank box may mean the active font lacks Yi coverage, even when the character is present in the text.

Neutral in Yi writing; alone, it reads as a text fragment or script sample rather than a complete message.

Do not read vix as an English word; it is the Latin-letter spelling of a Yi syllable.
