yi syllable hmox

Yi Syllable Hmox

161/1165

ꂠ is a syllable sign in standardized Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu; “hmox” is its Latin-letter reading label, not an English translation. In a Yi word, surrounding syllables supply the meaning; sent alone, it is only a fragment, so ask what word or dialect was intended. Older Yi writing varied by region and appeared in ritual texts.

What ꂠ means

It writes one syllable; the surrounding text supplies the meaning.

In standardized Liangshan Yi (Nuosu), “hmox” is the Latin-letter reading label for ꂠ, not an English gloss. Read it inside a Yi word or sentence; neighboring syllables and dialect shape the meaning.

Where did the Yi script come from?

It developed through regional traditions, rather than as one fixed system.

The broader Yi writing tradition is attested by the 15th century; one surviving example is a bronze bell inscription dated 1485.

Older Yi writing appears in texts by bimo, ritual specialists, on religion, magic, medicine, genealogy, and history. These manuscripts supported ceremonies and passed knowledge across generations; they were not a single everyday writing standard.

How does modern Yi differ from older Yi writing?

Modern Liangshan Yi writes syllables in one dialect; older forms varied.

The standardized Liangshan system was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It assigns signs to syllables in one dialect; older Yi traditions could also use signs for words or ideas, alternate forms, and regional systems.

A reader trained in a local traditional Yi script may not recognize a Liangshan-standard sign. Some regional traditions borrowed Chinese characters; the signs in this standard belong to Yi syllabic writing.

Ordinary in Yi writing; opaque as a lone message without Yi context.

One isolated syllable cannot reveal the full word or the sender’s intent.

Questions people ask

2

Is standardized Liangshan Yi used across all Yi-speaking regions?

No. It was designed for one dialect; other Yi regions retain distinct script traditions and may use different forms and readings.

Why does ꂠ show as a box?

The active font may lack this Yi glyph. The text still contains ꂠ; a font with Yi-syllable coverage can display it.
