What ꅩ means
It writes one Nuosu syllable; its word meaning comes from context.
Nuosu is a Yi language, and the modern Liangshan standard writes it with Yi syllable signs. In Yi Pinyin, hnix is the pronunciation label; the final x marks the secondary-high tone, a speech-pitch category, not an English gloss.
The oldest surviving example of Yi writing is an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485; earlier candidates remain debated. Traditional Yi writing served religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts, often transmitted by bimo (Yi ritual specialists). The Liangshan standard, devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, selected forms from older Northern Yi writing and does not represent every Yi variety. It later supported official documents, newspapers, literature, and schooling. Older names such as Cuan and Wei refer to related Yi writing traditions.
What does it mean when someone sends ꅩ?
A lone ꅩ gives too little context to read a reaction.
If the sender is writing Nuosu, the character belongs inside a word or phrase. Ask whether the message is meant as Nuosu text before treating it as a mood cue.
Why does ꅩ show as a box?
A box usually means the active font cannot draw this character.
ꅩ is text drawn by the font in use. If that font lacks Yi Syllables coverage, it may show a box or another fallback mark; the encoded character has not changed.
In Nuosu writing it is an ordinary syllable sign; outside Yi-language text it may be opaque to readers who do not read Yi.
A lone ꅩ is language-specific text, not a general mood cue.

1Why does ꅩ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
