What ꇺ means
It represents the syllable written as ki in the Liangshan/Nuosu Yi system.
That spelling is a reading, not an English translation. Each Yi character represents one syllable; a Yi word can be written as a sequence of syllables, and the surrounding Yi text supplies the word meaning.
The standardized Liangshan system targets the Nuosu dialect. Other Yi communities have their own script traditions and conventions, so ꇺ is not a universal spelling across every Yi language.
Why was the Yi script standardized?
It standardized one Liangshan tradition for modern literacy and publication.
Traditional Yi writing was not one uniform system. The signs used, their shapes, orientation, and writing direction varied by region. Village priests preserved manuscripts used especially for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts.
The standardized Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It grew from older Yi writing traditions, rather than from the Chinese Han-character system; standardized Yi writing later borrowed Chinese punctuation conventions.
The earliest surviving Yi-script example cited is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. Reports of older stone, bronze, pottery, and bone examples point to an evolving regional tradition, not a one-time invention with one uncontested starting date.

Questions people ask
1Can ꇺ show as a square?
Yes. The current font may lack Yi coverage; a font such as Nuosu SIL can display it. The square marks a missing character in the font, not a different symbol in the text.
