yi syllable shap

Yi Syllable Shap

ꎮ writes a Liangshan Yi syllable, roughly “shah” with low-falling pitch; Yi Pinyin spells it “shap,” with final p marking tone, not a consonant. It is writing, not an emoji. The earliest surviving Yi-script example is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485.

What ꎮ means

It writes one Liangshan Yi syllable. Yi Pinyin is the Latin-letter system for Nuosu; final p in “shap” marks tone, not a consonant. The surrounding word supplies meaning.

A Yi tradition credits Aki with devising the script during China’s Tang dynasty (618–907). Older forms varied by region; village bimo (ritual specialists) used manuscripts for funerals, healing, divination, genealogy, and ceremonies.

The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980. It writes Liangshan Yi, not every Yi language; fonts may change a sign’s outline without changing the character.

Why does ꎮ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
