What ꋩ means
It represents one sound-bearing syllable inside a Yi word.
In the standardized Liangshan spelling written with Latin letters, ꋩ is transcribed as zzy. In this system, syllable endings such as t, x, or p mark other tones; without one, zzy marks mid tone.
By itself, ꋩ does not translate a whole word. If someone sends it alone, ask what Yi word or sentence it belongs to.
Why was the Yi script standardized?
To give Liangshan Yi a shared written standard.
Traditional Yi writing had distinct regional forms, transmitted largely by bimo priests—religious specialists—in texts used for religious, magical, medical, and family-history purposes. Some scholars identify purported Yi inscriptions on objects from the Western Han period, but the identification is disputed. A bronze bell dated 1485 is an early surviving example of Yi writing. The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It drew on older northern Yi forms for official documents, newspapers, and literature, extending written use beyond specialist priestly training. Other regional Yi traditions remain distinct. Traditional Yi ideographs do not appear to derive directly from Han ideographs.
Ordinary in standardized Yi writing; opaque alone because it represents a syllable inside a word.
