How did Adlam's question mark develop?
Its outline changed, but its job stayed the same.
Brothers Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry developed Adlam in Guinea in the late 1980s to give the Fulani language a more unified written form suited to its sounds. Their first handwritten Adlam lessons covered water hygiene and basic medical care.
Arabic influenced Adlam's right-to-left direction and the way its letters join. The Adlam question mark changed shape in 2019 but kept its opening role.
Formal punctuation in written Adlam.
