What ࢇ means
It marks a softened hamza without writing the usual hamza letter.
Qur’anic marks preserve recitation details. Earlier manuscripts used colored dots for vowels and hamza; conventional vowel signs later replaced some of those dots, while specialist recitation marks continued.
In the Warsh and Qaloon Qur’an reading traditions, related hamza signs can take different positions and shapes. In 2010, the King Fahd Glorious Quran Printing Complex proposed encoding missing Qur’anic text characters. That dates the digital encoding effort, not the mark’s origin; the source edition matters when interpreting it.
How can I enter the baseline round dot?
Use the Unicode escape \u0887 in code or ࢇ in HTML.
ࢇ is a spacing character, not a combining dot: it occupies the baseline, can carry vowel marks, and may sit beside another hamza without changing the preceding letter.
Is this the raised round dot?
No: ࢇ sits on the line; is raised beside alif (ا).
Alif (ا) is the upright Arabic letter beside which the raised form sits. Printed editions may draw ࢇ at slightly different sizes; its baseline and round shape remain identifying cues.
Specialist Qur’anic notation; it signals a recitation or orthography context, not casual Arabic prose.
A lone ࢇ lacks the edition and reading tradition needed to settle its intended reading.

1Why does the dot look larger in one Qur’an edition?
It can. Different editions may draw it at slightly different sizes; its round shape and baseline position remain identifying cues.
