arabic triple dot punctuation mark

Arabic Triple Dot Punctuation Mark

؞ is a full stop in Ajami, writing African languages with Arabic script. It ends sentences in Hausa, Wolof, Fulani, and Mandinka; some editions use a plain period instead. The Qur’anic sign for paired pauses has a different job.

What ؞ means

It ends an Ajami sentence. Ajami writes African languages such as Hausa, Wolof, Fulani, and Mandinka in Arabic script. This Ajami period may be replaced by a plain period in editions using a wider Latin-style punctuation set.

A documented example appears in a 1929 Fulani-Hausa text; the wider Hausa Ajami record reaches back to the seventeenth century, which dates the writing tradition, not this mark. Its three-dot arrangement resembles the dot placement on Arabic letters such as ث and ش; that visual likeness does not establish a historical link.

Why does ؞ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
