What ৻ means
It marks ganda amounts.
It precedes Bengali digits: ৻১ is one ganda. A 2007 Unicode proposal records 20 gandas per anna, a rupee subdivision, and four cowrie shells per ganda. Bengal used separate rupee, ganda and anna-fraction signs; northern India used one mark.
A stone inscription from Mahasthan, from the 3rd century BCE, records related gandaka. Chatterji’s Bengali grammar prints the mark in 1927. India replaced anna and ganda with decimal paise, smaller rupee units, on April 1, 1957.
