Block Octant-14678

463/686

𜷔 is a block graphics tile, one piece for building a low-resolution picture. Kaypro used this eight-part pattern as pixels; Unicode preserves it beyond its original computer.

Text symbol

What 𜷔 means

It divides one character cell into eight small on/off blocks. The digits 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 identify the filled cells in its 2-by-4 grid.

The Kaypro graphics character set listed it as A9 in 1984, using reverse video (light and dark swapped). Its blocks acted like pixels, so strings of characters could sketch pictures in text mode. Unicode preserves the tile for compatibility with other text systems.

Questions people ask

1

Why do I see a box instead of 𜷔?

A blank box usually means the font or app has no glyph for this character. A font that covers this block can display it; the text still contains the same character.
