Text symbol

What 𜶪 means

It turns text cells into building blocks for pictures.

An octant is a 24 pixel grid inside a text cell. Japan’s NEC PC-8001 used this semigraphics method in 1979; a 1984 Kaypro 10 guide describes switching cells on or off to draw.

This pattern fills cells 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8, leaving 1 and 7 open. Adjacent tiles make a mosaic. Unicode preserves the family for emulators and old files; as of September 2026, terminal demos also use octants for pixel art and charts.
