What means
Five cells are filled in a 2-by-4 grid. The cell numbers run across each row, top to bottom: 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8 are on; 1, 5 and 6 are off. Other block tiles can sit beside it to extend the graphic.
Where did octant graphics come from?
They were used on Kaypro computers in the early 1980s. Kaypro computers running CP/M, an early operating system, had a 2-by-4 character grid for semigraphics: small blocks a program could switch on or off to plot simple pictures. The 2021 Unicode proposal aimed to preserve conversion of legacy text and support emulators and text-mode graphics.

Questions people ask
1Why does appear as a box?
Your font or app may not have a drawing for this octant character, so it shows a missing-glyph box. The text can still contain the right character; display depends on support for its glyph.
