What 𜷑 means

It is a text-graphics tile split into eight small cells. An octant has two columns and four rows; the digits in the name mark its filled cells. Set several beside one another and they form a larger block drawing.

In the 1980s, Kaypro computers running CP/M, an operating system, used octant mosaics for graphics; this exact pattern mapped to A6 in their reverse graphics set. Octants follow the mosaic idea of earlier quadrant (four-part) and sextant (six-part) tiles, giving finer patterns within one character cell.

For a multi-character drawing, neighboring glyphs need matching cell grids; mismatched block proportions can leave visible seams.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜷑 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
