Block Octant-3678

458/686

𜷏 is a block-pattern tile from text-mode graphics, with four of its eight cells filled. In a message, read it as a tiny graphic unless the surrounding words tell you more.

Text symbol

What 𜷏 means

It makes one text cell act like a small pixel picture.

The 24 semigraphics grid divides a text cell into eight on/off areas. Programs reused these cells to save memory and drawing work; adjoining tiles built bigger pictures.

Where does this pattern come from?

It belongs to early computer mosaic graphics.

Japan's NEC PC-8001 used a related tile-based graphics method in 1979. This exact pattern is documented in the Kaypro graphics set: its reverse-video setting swapped character and screen colors. Unicode keeps the pattern, not that old display setting.
