Block Octant-2678

456/686

In Microsoft Word, the hex value 1CDCD becomes 𜷍 when you press Alt+X. It is a mosaic tile with four filled parts in an eight-part character cell, designed to join other tiles as chunky screen graphics. The pattern comes from the Kaypro 2 4 semigraphics tradition.

What 𜷍 means

In Microsoft Word, type 1CDCD, then press Alt+X.

If letters or numbers sit immediately before the code, select only 1CDCD first; otherwise Word may include those characters in its conversion.

What does block octant 2678 do?

It makes one tile in a text-mode mosaic.

A character cell is a small slot in a text screen; divide it into two columns and four rows, and its lit pieces act like chunky pixels. Here the cell labels 2, 6, 7, and 8 are filled. Put matching tiles beside one another and they can draw larger shapes.

A 1983 Kaypro 10 user's guide documents this 2 4 system for screen graphics: programs could address pixels, draw lines, and combine block characters. Unicode 16.0 brought the octant patterns into a portable text standard. Their role shifted from marks on one machine's display to named characters software can exchange.

A technical mosaic tile: one filled patch for assembling terminal graphics.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜷍 show as a box?

The font or app may lack its glyph. Unicode 16.0 assigns the character, but software needs a font glyph to draw the mosaic; without one, it can show a missing-character box.
