What 𜵲 means

One cell in a larger pixel-art picture.

An octant divides a character cell into two columns and four rows. Its name marks the filled parts; neighboring tiles complete the image.

Why were octant blocks made?

They let computers draw on text grids.

Kaypro CP/M computers had 24 semigraphics: programs plotted pictures by switching cells on or off. Unicode's block graphics began in 1991 for compatibility; quadrant, sextant and octant tiles split cells into four, six or eight parts.
