What means
It fills cells 1, 2, and 8 in an eight-part tile.
Each character cell holds eight numbered rectangles in a 24 grid. This one fills the top pair and bottom-right cell. These patterns are semigraphics: coarse pixels that combine into pictures, borders, or charts.
By 1984, Kaypro's graphics set used the pattern for low-resolution images. Unicode later preserved it for compatibility with older character sets, letting text mosaics travel as text.
Why does this glyph show as a box?
Its font or terminal may not include a drawing for it.
A terminal is an app for command-line text. On 2026-09-28, Ghostty and Kitty displayed the block-mosaic set; xterm.js and urxvt did not. Without support, this character may appear blank or as a missing-glyph box.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
