block octant-378

Block Octant-378

426/686

𜶯 is a tile in text-mode graphics: a two-column, four-row block with three cells filled. The 3, 7, and 8 name those filled positions. Older computers treated the cells like pixels and combined characters into pictures.

What 𜶯 means

Kaypro computers running CP/M (an operating system) used this 2-by-4 set by 1983 to draw pictures within a text display. This exact pattern appears in the reverse-video set, where light and dark switch places. Unicode preserves it as a text character.

Why does this character show as a box?

The active font probably lacks its glyph. Cascadia Code added all octant characters in 2024, but the app must use a font that contains this one.
