What 🬨 means
It is one tile in a six-cell text mosaic.
A sextant divides one character space into two columns and three rows; each cell can be filled or left blank. Text screens could join these patterns into a simple image. A shared UK teletext specification appeared in 1974. France’s Minitel, an interactive service reached through telephone lines, used related mosaics from the early 1980s until 2012. Unicode later preserved the legacy graphics for compatibility.
Why do sextant blocks have gaps?
Teletext could show mosaic cells joined or separated.
Its 1976 specification also let page controls set mosaic color. This Unicode character carries the pattern, not those page settings. is a related character showing the same pattern with gaps. A font without 🬨 may show a missing-glyph box.
